Dan Murphys Lucky Number Competition Scam
A Dan Murphy’s lucky number competition scam has been identified by MailShark spam filters risking a malware infection. Dan Murphy’s is an Australian liquor supermarket chain with over 200 stores across the country.
Figure A shows the Dan Murphy’s lucky number competition scam email in question. The email risks a malware infection and should not be opened, but deleted straight away.
It is well branded to fit the Dan Murphy’s brand and claims to offer the chance to win a $500 gift card by checking your lucky number – avoid clicking anywhere within the email if opened.
The email claims to be sent by Dan Murphy’s, however, the email address used is clearly spam and in no way related to the official Dan Muphy’s website. The subject line reads “Lucky Numbers Competition”, which aims to attract attention and gain as many opens as possible.
There is no personal greeting, poor grammar, a fake disclaimer and several malicious links. You can check the destination URL by simply hovering over the link without clicking.
Figure B shows the destination website if any links within the email are clicked. It is very similar to the original email.
The similarity could be a scam tactic to confuse you into clicking again, which will lead to a malware infection.
To avoid a malware infection from this scam email avoid opening it and clicking anywhere.
