Win a CVS Pharmacy Gift Card Email Scam
The latest in sweepstakes email scams offers you a chance to win a $1,000 CVS gift card. CVS Pharmacy is the second largest pharmacy chain in the United States. Do not click any links in this email and delete it if received – it is an attempt to infect your computer with malware.
Figure A shows the scam email in question. It is very plain and is only text which contains 2 malicious text links (hyperlinked in blue). The subject line reads “FedEx# 58CJ518: $1,000 CVS Card Shipping Today” and the sender is shown as “Delivery Confirmation”, however the email address is in no way related to the official CVS Pharmacy website and is clearly spam.
This email also users the receiver’s email address (in black for privacy reasons) to try and instil confidence for you to click through. It is a 100% fake email and clicking through will lead to an attack on your computer and personal information.
Figure B is a screenshot of the malicious website you will land on if any links in the email are clicked. It is well branded and could be convincing to someone who is not familiar with email scamming practices. Everything on this page is fake and created to get you to click through again, including the offer of a CVS gift card. The simple question on the page is the main action they want you to take; clicking anywhere on this page will lead to a dangerous malware infection.
Email scams are becoming more creative and are targeting more and more popular chains and businesses in an attempt to catch you off guard. Be very wary of any emails of this nature reaching your inbox and as usual, delete this email straight away if received.
